While his teachers describe him as All-Boy-All-the-Time, lately Gus has begun to resemble the high-drama teenage daughter I never had.
If I want to turn on a light in the kitchen; he can only eat in complete darkness. The light is BLINDING him.
If I want to turn off the overhead light in the living room; he can't SEE without that light! He'll go BLIND!
If I want him to wear underwear; he wants to dance naked in the bay window and sing Life is a Highway at the top of his lungs, in full view of the neighbors.
Yesterday we experienced ALL of the above, ending with his feelings being crushed during the following incident:
All O'Briens were enjoying Episode 72 of Hee Haw (which we have on DVD, because Hee Haw = Awesome) when the Hager Twins (identical twin brothers) came on to sing a song called Mystery Train. As soon as they finished singing, Gus in his most sincere and thoughtful tone said, "I wish I was a matching brother."
And I laughed. Because what an awesome and hilarious way to think about identical twins. Matching brothers. HA!
Apparently, not ha.
Ha = Bad.
Ha = No one loves me. I am nothing but a joke to you people! You are ALWAYS laughing at me. GOD!
Much sobbing and arm flailing ensued, followed by demands for a slice of make-up cheese to help him feel less sad.
When I finally managed to convince him that I wasn't making fun, he still had to have the last word.
"Gus, I think you're so clever and funny, sometimes the things you say just make me laugh."
"Well I know that, Mommy, but I just have to TELL you how it makes me FEEL."
