all is love

On Friday night Gus performed a song called "All is Love" from theWhere the Wild Things Are soundtrack in the school talent show. Originally he'd planned to wear his Max costume, but at the last minute he opted to go with a more casual "rock star" look. And it's a good thing too, because it was approximately eight million and a half degrees in the auditorium by the time it was packed with people.

What blows me away about Gus is his confidence. The whole performance was his idea. He taught himself the song by watching a YouTube video and would accept ZERO input from me about how to sing it. I would try to make helpful suggestions about how to end it, and he'd just give me the hand. "No, mom. This is my deal. I know what I'm doing." The kid is five years old, and not for one millisecond did he exhibit an ounce of stage fright.

I wish I'd panned out a little to show the size of this stage ... but if you picture your typical high school auditorium, you'll have the basic idea. The backup singers are third graders--a last-minute addition that thrilled Gus no end.

Now, as Gus would say, "Just sit back and enjoy the show."http://vimeo.com/10483383#at=0
